Simon is a 58 year old carpenter who joined United Patients under the Gold Plan in April 2001. Towards the end of 2003 Simon felt unwell with flu-like symptoms and went to see his GP. His doctor took a blood count and referred Simon to a specialist. In February 2004 a bone marrow showed the presence of leukaemia. Six periods of hospitalisation for chemotherapy followed between February and December totalling 87 days. This generated a total payment of 7,436.76
"When I was told I had leukaemia I was devastated not just for myself but for my wife and kids too. On top of all the emotional stress and worry, I knew that I wouldn't be able to work for some time and it would be hard to manage on my wife's wages alone. The money I received from United Patients was a life-saver. It took away most of my financial worries during that difficult time and allowed me to enjoy spending some extra time with my grandchildren. United Patients were so helpful and considerate - I would highly recommend them to anyone."
